A man who could lay claim to the title of Macclesfield's oldest rocker, has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

John Mayall, who was born in Macclesfield, has been announced as one of 16 new inductees in the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

The blues musician, born in Macclesfield in 1933, will join fellow 2024 inductees Cher, Kool & The Gang, and Ozzy Osbourne into the esteemed Ohio-based musical institution.

Mayall is the second Macclesfield-related musician to be recognised by the Hall of Fame, following Joy Division and New Order's nomination last year.

Mayall, who will turn 91 later this year, was elated with the recognition.

"Congratulations to the entire @rockhall Class of 2024 and a special thank you to all the fans around the world for making this achievement possible," he wrote on Instagram.

"What an incredible honor this is to be inducted, and alongside Alexis Korner nonetheless (who, back in 1963, suggested that a living could be made playing the blues in London)."

Acts also going to be inducted in the 2024 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame with John, include Dionne Warwick, Foreigner, and the aforementioned fellow blues legend Alexis Korner.

Mayall is one of the best-known oldest active musicians in the world. He was nominated for a Grammy last year, and has been described as the 'godfather of British blues music'.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame wrote: "Throughout his career, Mayall has continued evolving, making visionary recordings that have expanded the reach of the blues without ever watering them down."

"Now in his nineties, John Mayall continues to inspire musicians and fans with a lifetime's worth of unforgettable and influential music."

He has performed with the likes of Eric Clapton to members of Fleetwood Mac.

His 1970s albums Back to the Roots and Memories albums harks back to his time when he grew up in our area.

Mayall, who now lives in the States, can be listened to on Spotify with his band The Bluesbreakers and as a solo artist.
