'Avoid travelling' warn police as main roads shut due to snow
Roads connecting Macclesfield to Buxton have been shut due to the snow.
Cheshire East Council have confirmed that both the A54 and A537 Cat and Fiddle routes are currently closed.
The council's highways team are currently working to clear the roads, with assistance from Cheshire Police's Rural Crime Team.
Speaking just before 8am, sergeant Rob Simpson said: "A537 and A54 closed from Macclesfield to Buxton.
"Cheshire East Council are up here trying to clear it.
"It's -2 and there's ice and slush hidden under the fresh layer of snow.
"Still bumps coming in around the county. I have patrols assisting in the west of the county too."
Police have already received multiple calls relating to crashes as a result of the snow this morning.
They have urged people to 'avoid travelling for the time being'.
Sergeant Simpson added: "If you're venturing out against the advice we put out, please reconsider.
"If you're in your 4x4 to 'play' make sure you're vehicle is legal. One traffic offence report has just been issued by a colleague to one with no MOT!
"We can see the appeal of the activity, but sometimes it's best to avoid the area.
"We're all invincible until we're not -If you crash up here, you may be surprised about how challenging it will be to get you home safely or even to a hospital if you're injured."
*POLICE UPDATE 14:30*
PC Teasdale said: "A537 and A54 are now open.
"Cheshire East Highways have assessed the conditions and it is now safe to reopen the roads. It is still slippy and as the snow starts to melt, there is a risk of further ice forming.
"Cheshire East will continue to grit the main routes. We are grateful for your support in adhering to the closures and finding alternative routes.
"We know it's an inconvenience, but safety is paramount. There is still potential for further challenging conditions, The Met Office continue to provide forecast updates."
