Behind the scenes as BBC Question Time comes to Macclesfield
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 23rd Jan 2026
Question Time's first episode of the year was filmed right here in Macclesfield.
King's School played host to the BBC's weekly debate programme on Thursday, January 22.
Fiona Bruce was joined by a panel comprised of Labour's Emily Thornberry, Conservative MP Stuart Andrew, Liberal Democrat Layla Moran and Greg Swenson, chair of Republican Overseas.
During the show, the audience asked about Donald Trump and Greenland, the future of the Conservative Party, and Adlington new town.
Caroline Johnson, director of external relations at King's, said: "It is very easy for people outside London to feel disconnected from the political decision-making that largely plays out in Westminster and for young people in particular to feel detached.
"It was therefore fantastic for the King's School to host the BBC's flagship political show, Question Time, and to bring the political debate to Macclesfield.
"The BBC were very keen to encourage as many young people as possible to apply to be on the show, and we were thrilled that a number of our sixth form students who are studying A-Level politics took this opportunity, and experienced being part of the audience.
"Amongst the topics submitted for debate from the audience were the UK's special relationship with America, defections amongst UK political parties and, the most popular topic of all, the Adlington new town proposal.
"I was really pleased that the proposed new town was able to be discussed, and that local people were able to share their views and hear those of the main political parties."
