Cheshire East Council leader welcomes government decision on Adlington new town

The leader of Cheshire East Council has shared his thoughts on the Adlington new town decision.
Cheshire East Council Labour Group has welcomed the news that the government will not be proceeding with plans for at least 14,000 new homes in the parish between Macclesfield and Stockport.
This comes after councillors voted unanimously to oppose the proposal.
However, Cheshire East leader Nick Mannion and deputy Michael Gorman had to overcome a motion of no-confidence, sparked by a letter they sent to New Towns Task Force chair Sir Michael Lyons last summer appearing to support the plans.
Now, councillor Mannion has praised the government's decision and turned his attention to helping to meet the local need for more affordable and social housing in Cheshire East, with nearly 12,000 households in Cheshire East on the housing waiting list.
He said: "This is a welcome decision after the unanimous decision of council which made clear to ministers that the proposal for a new town at Adlington was unsuitable.
"We will continue to work through our Local Plan process to make sure that new sites are bought forward in a planned way as part of the Local Plan process with the involvement of our communities."
