The rebuild of the B5470 is taking shape.

Cheshire East Council has shared an update on the work taking place on Macclesfield Road in Rainow.

The route has been closed since January 2025, when the embankment supporting the road collapsed, together with part of the carriageway.

Works to install the membrane which will reinforce the new embankment are now 'well underway', the council has said.

A total of 980 tonnes of stone has been delivered to the site and will be used to fill the void, with 4,607 tonnes of soil having already been removed from the site.

Meanwhile, onsite drainage surveys have been completed with installation of the new land drainage system expected to begin soon.

Furthermore, de-vegetation works along the road are scheduled to take place during the week commencing March 23.

The B5470 was initially expected to reopen in March, however, this has now been pushed back to the summer.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council said: "Carrying out the works during the winter months has allowed us to observe the issues on site at their most severe.

"Excavations on both sides of the embankment have uncovered longstanding and previously undetected defects, which must be addressed to allow the safe reopening of the carriageway.

"These further issues mean additional work is required to ensure the long‑term stability and safety of the road. Progress has been slowed further by recent snow, storms and prolonged wet weather.

"As a result, additional work is required and, unfortunately, this will extend the construction programme. We now anticipate that the road will reopen in early summer 2026."
