Cheshire East Council has announced it plans to commemorate the impact of the pandemic, but no details have been provided of what form it will take.

The announcement comes as people across the country marked one year since the first lockdown was put in place.

The council says the commemoration will acknowledge the "loss and sacrifice" of communities across the borough. More details are expected in the "coming weeks".

Commenting on yesterday's National Day of Reflection and the commemoration, council leader Cllr Sam Corcoran said: "This past year has been one of heartbreak, loss and challenge and sacrifice among all our families, friends, neighbours and communities.

"It is only right that we take some time to reflect upon the terrible impact of the pandemic and the many lives lost and impacted by suffering.

"As lockdown eases and we look towards some return to what we used to call normal life, it becomes even more important to honour the memory of those who are no longer with us, as well as the challenges that so many of us met and still meet with our partners right across local government, health, police, fire and rescue, the voluntary and community sector and business."

Historian Dan Snow has called for a national memorial to be erected akin to the cenotaph to act as a "permanent reminder" of the pandemic and those who lost their lives.

Cheshire East's deputy leader, Cllr Craig Browne, said that it is important to "pause and reflect on this one year anniversary".

He added: "As we take stock of this moment it seems fitting that we should look ahead this year to plans to honour all those we have lost, as well as to commemorate the perseverance, resilience and commitment shown by local people throughout these challenging times."
