A Macclesfield café has shut for good.

Gastown on Chestergate has announced it has closed with immediate effect.

While not going into specifics, the café says the decision comes about due to challenges facing the hospitality industry.

A Facebook post announcing the closure reads: "We fought for as long as we could, but unfortunately we've had to accept that our only option was to close.

"We know we've had a stack of loyal customers, and you are the reason we made it as long as we did.

"Every breakfast, lunch, coffee, takeaway, recommendation and return visit mattered more than you know."

The café's parting message ends with a call for people to support local, independent, businesses.

It reads: "If you've got a local business you love, use it.

"Don't just say it's great. Don't just say you'd miss it if it closed.

"Use it. Support it. Spend with it.

"The big brands will be ok. But while the economy is this tough, local independent cafés, restaurants and shops genuinely need your help.

"If you want them to stick around, they need your custom."
