COLUMN: Cheshire East leader on Andy Burnham, missed bin collections and Macclesfield Forest fire
By Nick Mannion 27th Jul 2026
We now have a new prime minister in Andy Burnham, and he has certainly hit the ground running in his first week in office.
Andy Burnham has been unequivocal in stating that his top priority is the cost of living crisis and to provide help for those struggling the most.
I totally share his priority. Whilst Cheshire East Council is having to make tough decisions around services and budgets, I make no apology whatsoever in repeating my pledge that this administration remains committed to protecting the most vulnerable members of our communities, both young and old.
Indeed, we are working with residents and partners to redesign services such as the council's 'Family First' programme which will offer more effective early support to families whilst also providing value for money for the council taxpayer.
While we are making strong and sustained progress towards putting the Council on a sound financial footing, the re-issue of the Best Value Notice by the Government is a reminder that the job is not yet done. We will maintain the grip and pace of change.

I finish with an apology, and a 'Thank You'.
An apology to anyone who has not had their bins empties recently.
The recent missed collections were the result of a perfect storm of several factors coming together to seriously affect the performance of this key local service.
We, and our loyal and dedicated frontline staff are working hard to put things right. Please support them as we rebuild the resilience of the service.
Finally, a huge 'Thank You' to everybody who helped to tackle the big fire up in Macclesfield Forest last week.
Led by our firefighters and supported by partners, local residents and businesses, the fire was bought under control.
However, even though we have had some rain since, the risk is still very high.
Please take extra care in our wonderful local countryside.
Nick Mannion - Leader, Cheshire East Council
