Questions have been raised over planned roadworks in Macclesfield.

Work to create a new right-turn lane into Moss Lane from Congleton Road is set to get underway in August.

However, residents have questioned why the scheme does nothing to address the long-standing issue of queues of traffic trying to exit Moss Lane.

One resident, who has asked to remain anonymous, said: "Like many local residents, I'm not against improvements to the junction – quite the opposite.

"The queues trying to turn right out of Moss Lane have been a problem for years, and with all the housing that's been built, it's only got worse.

"My concern is that the proposed plans don't appear to address that long-standing problem.

"Instead, they create a dedicated right-turn lane for traffic turning into Moss Lane from Congleton Road.

"I'd like to see Cheshire East pause the works, review the design and come back with a solution that genuinely improves the junction for everyone.

"At the very least, residents should have been given much clearer information about what was being proposed before work was due to start."

It is understood the works will begin in early August and will be carried out by Argyle NW Construction.

Cheshire East Council has confirmed that the project is being delivered through a Section 278 agreement on behalf of housing developer, Barratt Redrow.

The works form part of a scheme that was approved through the planning process for the Silk Waters Green development.

A spokesperson for Cheshire East Council, said: "The development received planning permission in 2017, and the associated traffic impacts were assessed as part of that application.

"At the time, these assessments were undertaken in the context of wider transport improvements that were planned for the area.

"The current junction works include the provision of a right-turn lane into Moss Lane and are being delivered in accordance with the approved scheme."

A Barratt Homes spokesperson added: "The scope of these works was agreed with the local highways department and approved by the local authority as per our planning consent.

"We are aware the traffic exiting Moss Lane is being affected by the roadworks, we aim to keep disruption to a minimum and appreciate people's patience whilst the works are being completed."

Councillors for the Macclesfield South ward, Fiona Wilson and Brian Puddicombe, say they have called for the works to be reconsidered.

"The junction improvements must make it safer and easier to turn right out of Moss Lane onto Congleton Road," said councillor Wilson.

"We have called on Cheshire East Highways to halt the works and for the design to be reconsidered but have had no response.

"Bearing in mind the works are to start next week we have now escalated our concerns to the acting Chief Executive of Cheshire East."

I agree it is a nightmare junction. I would like to add as a resident on Gawsworth Road, the broken Cross changes from the roundabout to lights is awful. Anyone turning right at the lights cannot see oncoming traffic and there are no filters for turning right. It is horrendous. Also at busy times especially morning school traffic it backs up Gawsworth Road for at least 500 metres.
Can we have this sorted or get the roundabout back.
