Coronavirus: Council to discuss plans to reopen Macclesfield primary schools in June

By James Kelly 18th May 2020

Cheshire East Council is yet to decide whether Macclesfield's primary schools will reopen on 1st June for some year groups in line with the government timetable.

Under current government plans, reception, year 1 and year 6 pupils will be the first to return to classes; but this is contingent on a continued fall in coronavirus infections.

Cllr Kathryn Flavell, the council cabinet member for children and families, told Nub News: "Proposals are being discussed this week and a communication will go out to parents following any decision."

A number of local authorities in the region have announced they will not be opening on 1st June, with Andy Burnham, the Greater Manchester Mayor, asking the government to show "flexibility" for different regions.

Cllr Flavell said: "We know that the safe reopening of schools, colleges and early years settings across Cheshire East is causing a great deal of concern among school leaders, teachers and many parents.

"The safety of children and young people is our utmost priority and we are working tirelessly with education providers, unions and the Department for Education to provide guidance on plans for a phased reopening while adhering to social distancing in classrooms and reduced class sizes."

She added: "I'd like to take this opportunity to thank all those teachers and school staff who continue to support the children of key workers and those most vulnerable during this current time."

In a letter to parents on 12th May, Peter Rubery, the CEO of the Fallibroome Trust which is responsible for Marlborough, Whirley and Broken Cross Primary Schools in Macclesfield has asked for parents' "patience".

He wrote: "The initial guidance contains severe restrictions and it is clear that we cannot return to anything like 'normal' school."

Mr Rubery added: "We will now consider the measures required to meet the guidelines and concerns. Headteachers will confirm their initial thoughts for partial and phased return for nominated groups as soon as possible."
