Macclesfield railway station's refurbishment has been delayed again.

Avanti West Coast has confirmed that the works taking place at Macclesfield station will now not be complete until the autumn.

The £2 million project, currently focused on the main station building, had originally been scheduled to finish in the spring, with the train operator stating such as recently as early June.

On Friday, July 31, a spokesperson said: "We're continuing to work closely with our contractors to deliver the redevelopment works at Macclesfield station and would like to thank customers for their patience and understanding.

"Parts of the project are nearing completion and we're looking forward to welcoming customers and the community into the new station environment soon, which will provide an improved gateway to the town.

"We know many people are keen to understand when the work will be finished and work is expected to be completed in autumn."

Reacting to this news, Macclesfield MP Tim Roca said: "I am disappointed by today's news and the uncertainty it creates.

"For many months I have been pressing Avanti West Coast over the delays to the redevelopment of Macclesfield station. This is one of the busiest and most profitable stations on the route, with thousands of passengers using it every day, yet they have had to put up with months of disruption while the project has repeatedly slipped behind schedule.

"Local people deserve answers about why these delays have occurred and when they can finally expect the station to be completed. I have already written to Avanti on a number of occasions and, in light of today's announcement, I will be applying further pressure for a full explanation and a firm timetable for completion.

"Macclesfield deserves a station that reflects the importance of our town. Passengers have shown considerable patience and it is now time for Avanti to deliver on the promises they have made."
