Documentary on the planet's 'addiction to oil' to be screened in Macclesfield
By Alex Greensmith 16th Apr 2023
A Macclesfield co-operative and good cause is to screen a recently-released movie about the oil industry.
The Oil Machine is a British-made film about the Scottish oil industry, and Earth's wider addiction to the fossil fuel.
The event will be hosted in Macclesfield by Roe Street shop Scoop and Scales, screened in the same building upstairs with their Roe Street neighbours Cinemac.
The movie made in Britain and released last November ago claims to reveal the true price of our dependence on oil, and is just under an hour-and-a-half long.
Following a successful screening in Congleton last year, it is now Macclesfield's turn to show the film. The film starts at Cinemac on Sunday April 30 at 2pm, and it won't cost you a penny to enter.
Initially released in UK cinemas and community venues to coincide with COP27 climate conference, and to implement an impact campaign that promotes urgent and critical discussion. Now, it comes to Macclesfield.
The Oil Machine explores Earth's economic, historical and emotional entanglement with fossil fuels by looking at the conflicting imperatives around North Sea oil and gas. The films bio describes the industry as "[an] invisible machine at the core of our economy and society [which] now faces an uncertain future as activists and investors demand change. Is this the end of oil?"
The film's director Emma Davie said: "We are delighted that a screening is being hosted by Macclesfield's Scoop and Scales and would encourage as many people as possible to get involved.

"Now more than ever it is vital we understand what is happening in the North Sea and the choices before us. Every part of our country, every sector of our community is affected by this and the participation of local voices is essential if we are to build public support for the ambitious changes that are needed."
The film features a wide array of voices, Sir David King, UK Government's Chief Scientific Advisor from 2000–2007, said this in The Oil Machine:
"I believe that what we do over the next five years will determine the future of humanity for the next millennium," said .
Tessa Khan (climate lawyer from Uplift) said on the film: "The Oil Machine is an incredibly timely look at the role that the oil and gas industry has played in shaping the UK."

Matthew Todd, of Scoop and Scales, said "We are delighted to show The Oil Machine later this month."
"Join us for a screening of this compelling new film on Sunday 30th April at 2pm following the Treacle Market in Cinemac Macclesfield.
"View the film followed by a discussion which is not at all compulsory to join in. Refreshments available from Cinemac. Doors open at 1.30."
Tickets are FREE, but it is recommended that you reserve a slot so the Cinemac doesn't fill up.
