Empty homes in Macclesfield up by over 30% in two years
The amount of unoccupied properties in our area is on the rise.
Despite new houses being built in what feels like every corner of the town, there are still hundreds of homes which don't have anyone living in them in the Macclesfield area.
This is according to FOI requests submitted over the past two years from Macclesfield Nub News.
The current amount of empty homes in the Macclesfield parish (areas which are also covered by Macclesfield Town Council) was confirmed by Cheshire East Council.
"In Macclesfield Parish we have 604 empty properties, these are empty for a number of different reasons," said Cheshire East Council in a statement.
This figure was 462 when asked by Macclesfield Nub News in March 2021.
That is a percentage increase of 30.73%.
Meaning the amount of empty homes is over 30 per cent higher in September 2023 than two-and-a-half years ago.
From legal disputes, unwilling landlords to owners moving into care, there are a multitude of reasons homes could be empty. Macclesfield is in-line with a regional rise of empty properties.
In fact, the north west has the most empty homes than any other English region, with 101,778 empty homes. This regional figure is up 1.3% from 2021. (Source)
In total, there are 676,452 empty homes in England. Second homes are not included within this figure.
