Andy's Man Club, which was founded in Macclesfield at the start of the year, have already won an award.

A borough-wide awards ceremony for community heroes has seen three Macclesfield organisations or individuals be recognised with a gong.

The Everybody Awards is an annual celebration which recognises the achievements of local heroes in a sport, physical activity or health and wellbeing in Cheshire East, who deserve to be recognised for all of their hard work and dedication in the community.

150 guests attended Crewe Hall last Friday to find out who won, in the event hosted by Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

The first Macclesfield winner revealed was in the Community Initiative of the Year category.

This was to recognise something new that is hosted inside the buildings of local leisure centres, that has really captured the public's interest.

And the winner was something held at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, that was only founded this January.

ANDYSMANCLUB, who meet every Monday evening at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, is a male mental health group which champions peer-to-peer talking.

The award organisers had this to say on their victory: "Andy's Man Club aims to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health and create a judgment-free, confidential space where men can be open about the storms in their lives.

"Since starting the Macclesfield Branch of Andy's Man Club, they've had men from all walks of life, ages and issues attend. This is usually the first time they have talked about their 'storms' and for many attendees the first time they have been listened to.

"The Club has saved lives, repaired relationships, fixed families and set individuals back on a track to take responsibility for their mental health and situations."

ANDYSMANCLUB Macclesfield Co-Founder Paul Clayton, who went to collect the award, said: "Very humbled for wining the "Community Initiative of the year" award at the #EverybodyAwards 2023.

"A big thank you to all involved in Andys Man Club Macclesfield especially our great Facilitators, Steve, James and Phil and the good people of Macclesfield, Bollington and beyond who share and promote our social media and take our flyers and help spread the word.

"Also, thanks you Everybody Health & Leisurefor providing the room at the leisure centre every Monday night so we can help those going through Storms.

"You provide a room for 2 hours and you help save lives and families."

The biggest thank you goes to all the guys who walk through the door at 7pm on Monday nights to "get things off your chests" everyone a hero. It is okay to talk."

Next up in Macc to win an Everybody Award was Mencap Marvels Beech Hall School English Channel Swim Squad. The independent school's aquatic athletes were nominated for the Diversity and Inclusion Award, which they won.

The school's swimmers are on a seemingly never-ending mission to swim for charity.

This altruistic efforts in the water has already seen them bag a Mayor's Civic Award this year, and now they have an Everybody Award to add under their belt (or should we say, stitch onto their swimming towel).

The event organisers had this to say about the Tytherington award winners: "Beech Hall Mencap Marvels, are a group of wonderful diverse minded pupils and staff that promotes driven positivity in life with focus and determination with commitment, resilience and team work."

"The school is an inclusive neurodiverse school which relishes on being unique building skills for the real world. While doing this the swim squad work hard to train for swimming the English Channel in a relay every year, pupils aged 11-15, while raising money for Mencap. It helps the children learn invaluable skills building self-confidence which can be transferred to adulthood."

The final winner from Macclesfield in the Everybody Awards 2023 was Torbjorn Eyre.

This was for the fundraising work they have done for Sutton good cause The Rossendale Trust. The Rossendale Trust provide assisted living care for vulnerable adults and allow them to thrive.

He's supported the Trust since he was a child, and has ran countless London Marathon's for The Rossendale Trust. (And will do again next year.)

Everybody said of Torbjorn's victory: "Andrew Kolker, Chairman at Everybody Health and Leisure [who is also a Cheshire East Councillor] has chosen this deserving winner from the nominations that were submitted this year."

"The award recognises exceptional commitment and achievement from an individual to their sport and is a true inspiration to their community.

"Being from a motorcycle family, Torbjorn has ridden in international motorcycle trials since the age of 16, but when competing he had a very nasty 'get off' and was pinned beneath the bike against a hard rock.

"After treatment at Furness General Hospital for a collapsed lung and internal trauma, the specialist said he needed to get an activity to strengthen his breathing. Torbjorn decided to run the London Marathon in 2003.

"He contacted The Rossendale Trust who were asking for runners in the event and got an entry under their banner.

"He has competed for them for the last 20 years.

"For the last six years he has organised a motorcycle charity trial for Rossendale called the Tower Trophy and in 2019, he was awarded the Mayor of Macclesfield's Civic Award as Sports Personality of the Year for his achievements for Rossendale."

The Rossendale Trust commended Torbjorn's 'exceptional commitment and achievements and for being an inspiration to the community', on social media.

But it was not just the trio of Macclesfield winners that should be celebrated.

Macclesfield should also be proud of David Hubbard, who made the final four nominees of the Unsung Hero award for his efforts with Macclesfield Town Ladies Football Club, but did not win.
