Macclesfield's newest event went down a treat.

The first-ever Northern Light took place in Market Square on Saturday, January 18.

A helter-skelter transformed the town's skyline, with visitors treated to fire shows, magic and plenty of freebies.

Mayor of Macclesfield, councillor Sandy Livingstone, said: "Thanks to all of you who came on Saturday.

"A free event to light up a cold January day.

"Many thanks to Macclesfield Town Council staff and volunteers and Macclesfield Community ArtSpace.

Northern Light took the place of the popular Lantern Parade for 2025.

The fun got underway at 2pm, with queues quickly building for the helter-skelter.

Elsewhere, Cheshire Outdoors set up fire pits where visitors could keep warm and toast marshmallows, with 1,000 of the sweet treats handed out by Macclesfield Town Council.

"We do apologise for running out of marshmallows, we had unprecedented demand which exceeded even our expectations!" said a spokesperson.

Crowds also enjoyed fire shows from Chris Marley and an appearance from Lantern Parade fan favourite Lobster a la Carte.

Meanwhile, Chris Hickey treated guests to close-up magic before hopping on his unicycle for some LED juggling.

Chris said: "Really fun afternoon performing some magic and circus skills at Macclesfield Town Council 's North Light festival.

"Thank you to everyone who came along, and a massive thank you to the council for organising yet another fantastic day."
