A prominent high street building is to go under the hammer.

The former M&S on Mill Street looks set to be sold at auction next month.

With a guide price just shy of £1 million, the property is being marketed by Auction House North West and is described as a 'retail or development opportunity'.

The listing reads: "Centrally located on Mill Street, the main pedestrianised retail throughfare within Macclesfield town centre, this building provides a total of 55,740sq.ft/5,178m2 which is arranged over ground, first and second levels, together with a smaller area on the third floor.

"Offering a variety of development opportunities including retail, offices, leisure/fitness centre, hospitality or residential (subject to relevant planning permission)."

The Mill Street M&S closed in November 2022, with the British retail company relocating to Barracks Mill.

Since then, the building has sat empty.

It now looks set to be sold via an online auction, which runs from October 13 to 14.

The new guide price, £950,000, is significantly lower than the £2.5 million asking price the property had when it first went up for sale in 2024.
