Former Macclesfield TUI site applies for betting licence in exciting development

It has been the better part of two years since it shut down, but the site of a former travel agent in the centre of Macclesfield could soon be occupied.

Located just a stone's throw from Macclesfield Town Hall, the empty Mill Street shop has been an eyesore to some and long in-need of a new tenant.

But it appears to have finally found an interested party, as national betting chain Betfred are set to move in.

Eagle-eyed Maxonians may already know that our town has a Betfred just round the corner on Chestergate.

"It is a re-site," said BETFRED spokesperson Mark Pearson.

"In the new location we'll be able to open a more modern shop with better facilities,"

The move is hoped to be completed later this year.

It is already too late to make comments on the betting licence, with the deadline having been a month ago. However, you can still view it on the Mill Street shopfront.

Betfred are a relatively local bookmakers, having their headquarters in Cheshire with their Warrington site.

The British bookmaker was founded in 1967 by billionaire Fred Done.

As of 2019, they have 1620 sites across the UK.

The vacant retail unit Betfred are set to occupy is situated at 4-6 Mill Street, Macclesfield SK11 6LY.

Cheshire East Council have been contacted for comment.

It is not the first example this year of a national chain moving their Macclesfield store to Mill Street.

In the spring, Clarks moved to a new site - also within walking distance - as they left The Grosvenor Centre for Mill Street.
