'Here to stay' say Nationwide as Macclesfield branch building hits the market

Nationwide's Macclesfield branch building has hit the market.
Cheshire House on Castle Street has appeared for sale on the property website, Rightmove.
However, Nationwide has assured customers that they are not going anywhere.
A spokesperson for the building society said: "Our Macclesfield branch is here to stay.
"Any proposed sale of the building is conditional on us remaining in situ, so it is very much business as usual for our customers and colleagues while a purchaser is sought.
"The proposal also offers a positive opportunity to make better use of unused space and support further investment in Macclesfield's high street."
The Rightmove listing states that Nationwide intend to 'reconfigure' their existing branch and 'consolidate into a smaller, more efficient space'.
As part of the sale, they will grant themselves a new 999 year lease at a 'peppercorn rent'.
The listing adds: "This presents a rare opportunity for interested parties to redevelop and repurpose the remainder of the building for alternative uses, subject to planning.
"Offers are invited for the freehold interest in the entire building, subject to the benefit of the long leasehold being granted to Nationwide on part of the space along with the existing tenancy at 19-21 Castle Street."
The sale of Cheshire House includes not only the Nationwide building, but also two neighbouring properties.
One these has been vacant for several years, having previously operated as Swinton Insurance.
The second is currently let to Apple Blinds, with the tenancy not expected to be impacted by the sale.
