IN PICTURES: Macclesfield Pride 2024 is a rousing success

Macclesfield Pride took place last weekend.

The event, founded in 2018, takes place every July.

For 2024, there an outstanding parade in the town centre, showcasing the likes of the favourite local DJ Emma and the LGBTQ+ Singing project.

Three photographers from Macclesfield have kindly shared their images with us, as you can see in these candid images. Irene Lea, Brendan McPhillips and Michael Steff captured the event in these stunning pics.

The yearly festival was bursting with vibrant colours to irradiate the festival's unrivalled atmosphere with new events being added such as Old Millstone Pride Carwash, DJ Night, or a Pie in the Face. 

Additionally, the festival featured several community-focused activities aimed at improving inclusivity and equality.

The event was a huge success with a hugely popular reception to spread the slogan "Promoting Equality, Celebrating Diversity."

Thanks to the sponsors and volunteers the event consisted of numerous live music, performances by local artists, and numerous stalls offering food, drinks, and merchandise.

Countless local businesses and organisations sponsored and supported this event, supporting the funds to make the event one to never forget.

Footfall has been reported by MaccPride to be an astonishing 14,500, in a welcome boost to Macclesfield's high street.

Organiser Joanne Stratford reflected on the event.

"This year's Pride event was a resounding success," she said.

"Thank you to the fantastic group of volunteers who make up the committee".

Since last year the event has improved with organisers such as Joanne Stratford listening to the community and improving the event.

"Following feedback from the community, the stage had a pride feel, and we also had a licensed bar," said Joanne.

One of the highlights from the event was the 5th Annual Karaoke Challenge which had its heats leading up to the festival and served as an outstanding grand finale during the festival.

The 'Pooch of Pride' dog show, named in memory of a pug that used to come in rainbow attire, was another highlight.

The festival's slogan 'Promoting Equality, Celebrating Diversity' resonated throughout the day, highlighting the community's commitment to inclusivity and celebration of diversity.

"Pride events increase the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, helping to raise awareness about issues they face and promoting acceptance and understanding within the wider community," added Joanne.

"These events provide a safe and supportive environment for individuals to celebrate their identities openly and proudly, fostering a sense of belonging and community.

"They offer a space for LGBTQ+ individuals and allies to come together in solidarity, showing support for one another, showcasing the rich diversity of the LGBTQ+ community through various forms of cultural expression, including music, art, and dance.

"These events serve as a platform to advocate for equal rights, legal protections, and policy changes, highlighting ongoing struggles and the need for continued progress towards equality."

Macclesfield's newly-elected MP Tim Roca, who is gay, was amongst those in attendance. He posted a rousing message to his social media.

"This year's Pride event was a resounding success, everyone's presence, enthusiasm, and support is always truly inspiring," concluded Joanne.

"It was a powerful testament to our collective strength and resilience. We came together to celebrate our identities, honour our history, and look towards a future of inclusivity and equality.

"As we reflect on the joy and unity experienced during Pride, let's continue to support one another, educate those around us, and advocate for the rights and protections that are still needed.
