A Macclesfield church which is celebrating their 180th anniversary this year, is promoting a crowdfunder which would make an appropriate birthday present.

St. Paul's Church on Glegg Street in Macclesfield requires urgent repairs and refurbishments for their church

In particular, the Anglican Church, east of Macclesfield's town centre, needs urgent roof repair work.

The church, built between 1843-44 for £5000, (equivalent to £530,719.62 in April 2024), is in need of £650,000 in order to reroof and repair the damage to the interior of St Paul's.

It is estimated that it will take 18 months to two years to raise the sufficient funds to repair the damage.

Part of this, is through a new JustGiving page that has been launched by the church - for which you can donate HERE.

St. Paul's Church fundraising initiative has been running since April and has already raised over £2,000 towards their refurb appeal.

Throughout the last few years, heavy storms and wet weather has meant there has been much water damage to the interior in the main church building.

This has led to the church being filled with buckets to catch the leaks around the building, and a few umbrellas to promote the need for a fundraiser in a jovial manner.

St. Paul's Reverend Canon Veronica Hydon said: "We want to stop the leaks we want to upgrade the heating system."

"We want to do it in an eco-friendly way. We are hoping to put in grant applications for the bigger amounts if we can."

It has been recommended to the church that the repairs on the building be done as soon as possible, to prevent long-term permanent damage to the building.

Improving and repairing the building would lead to a more usable community space and more environmentally-friendly, efficient services, according to Veronica, who was formerly reverend at St. Oswald's Church in Bollington.

Repairs needed are to re-roof the upper and lower rooves of the church, including modifications to the guttering to prevent water getting into the building in the future, replace and re-plaster all internal ceilings panels, re-plaster internal walls where needed, and redecorate the building internally.

St Paul's also seeks to re-light the building with energy efficient lighting, modernise the sound and media system, reheat the building in an energy efficient way, and repair the spire.

Veronica thanked the church community by saying "It's really good if people can when they're able to give a bit back in helping to support us."

Macclesfield businesses and individuals can sponsor 'a day' in the run-up to their 180th anniversary, and get your business or yourself shouted out on social media.

Sponsorship costs a tenner, but if you don't wish to donate that much to the appeal, or would prefer to donate in cash (to which you can donate at service), there are plenty of alternative methods to donate.

Sponsors will get shouted out on their active social media, in their countdown they have been doing in the 180 days towards their birthday this autumn. There is 92 days to go until they will celebrate their 180th anniversary on October 12. If you wish to sponsor a day, you can call 01625 501773.

The church offers many extra clubs and services throughout the week for adults and children, such as: a Saturday café, which is open to all, and a lunch club twice a month.

They also host choirs, pilates classes, and a toddler group.

Veronica became Reverend at St. Paul's in March 2021 .

"This [church] hall space is really well used by lots of community groups [such as] scouts cubs brownies rainbows, wellbeing groups and toddler groups," added Veronica.

"It's kind of like a deep-rooted church community but also very open to new people coming in. My husband and I have slotted in quite well into the community.

"I'm really thankful to be part of this church community you know it welcomed me so warmly.

"What I like about it it has open policy everybody is welcome."

An weather-themed concert was even held at the church yesterday, to highlight the umbrellas that raise awareness for the sought-to-be-fixed leaking roof.

The 180th anniversary will be celebrated on October 12, but for now all focus is on the fundraiser.

Good luck St. Paul's. Let's hope you raise the roof (metaphotically, not literally) with support.

Donations can be made in cash in person at the church, or online at the JustGiving site via this link.
