Investigation unable to determine cause of bin lorry fire

An investigation has been unable to determine the cause of a bin lorry fire.
Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service were called to Knight Street in Macclesfield on Thursday morning (September 25) following reports of a fire in a refuse collection vehicle.
At a meeting of Cheshire East Council's environment and communities committee later that day, director of planning and environment Chris Allman warned that such incidents can be caused by discarded batteries.
However, following an investigation, the cause of the blaze could not be determined.
Councillor David Jefferay, chair of the aforementioned committee, said: "Following an investigation by the fire service, the cause of the fire involving a Cheshire East refuse collection vehicle— which occurred during bin collections— could not be confirmed.
"We're grateful to the fire service for their quick response on the day.
"The fire caused serious damage to the vehicle's hydraulics, meaning it will be out of action for some time."

Despite this conclusion, councillor Jefferay echoed the earlier warning about discarding batteries.
He said: "This incident highlights the growing issue of hazardous items being placed in household bins.
"Hazardous items such as batteries, electricals, gas and helium canisters can catch fire and cause serious harm. These items must never be placed in household waste".
"Sadly, our crews are seeing more of this – and it puts both our staff and the public at risk. We urge residents to dispose of hazardous waste safely and check before binning anything they're unsure about."
