A man who attacked officers and urinated in the back of a police van has been jailed.

Osian Hughes, of no fixed address, appeared at Warrington Magistrates on Friday, March 20, to face one count of criminal damage and five counts of assaulting a constable.

The 35-year-old pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 weeks in prison.

Chief Inspector Zoe Bowden said: "Hughes's disorderly and violent behaviour was totally unacceptable and something our officers shouldn't have to face during the course of their duty.

"They are there to protect the public not to be assaulted by them.

"For him to go on to urinate in the van was disgusting behaviour which took a police vehicle off the streets while it was cleaned. I'm pleased to see that he was jailed for his offensive and violent behaviour."

Police were called to Mill Street in Macclesfield at 3.22pm on Thursday, March 19, after Hughes was observed on CCTV assaulting two people.

Officers attended and it was clear that Hughes was under the influence of alcohol. He was aggressive and abusive towards officers as they tried to deal with the situation.

On reviewing CCTV officers discovered Hughes was the victim of the assault not the aggressor, but his demeanour and his threatening behaviour meant that he was the one needing to be arrested.

He grabbed at officers and spat at them. More officers were called to the scene, but Hughes continued to be violent towards officers and continued to spit at them. He even bit through to spit hood to continue spitting.

Once in the police van, he pulled his trousers down and urinated on the floor and walls of the cell, which had to be deep cleaned at a cost of £80.
