OPINION: 'An important step forward, but not the end of the fight for Adlington'
By Matthew Hancock-Bruce 23rd Mar 2026
This is a hugely significant milestone and a fantastic achievement for our community.
The decision to remove Adlington from the new towns list recognises what residents, environmental bodies and planning experts have consistently said all along, that Adlington is NOT a suitable location for a new town, particularly given its environmentally sensitive setting, rich wildlife habitats and its importance for supporting nature in Cheshire.
This is a direct result of residents, supporters and campaign groups coming together to make their voices heard and reflects the depth of local feeling. We want to recognise and thank everyone who united with us, from residents and farmers to the many Facebook and community groups who helped to share information and raise awareness of this proposal.
This success belongs to the community and shows the power of a united voice.
However, we are not complacent. This is an important step forward, but it is not the end of the fight.
We all remain firmly opposed to unnecessary development on green belt land. Brownfield sites must always be prioritised, and we will continue to hold Cheshire East Council and decision-makers to account to ensure that this principle is upheld.
We are also committed to protecting this high-quality green belt and productive agricultural land that supports our local farming community and food production.
Our green belt is precious, and we will continue to stand together to protect it for future generations.
