Lidl has revealed they are seeking to open a site in Macclesfield, which could bring up to 40 jobs to our town.

The German discount retailer already has over 800 stores across the UK, and they have plans to open 50 stores nationwide in the next year creating 2,000 jobs.

A new document released by supermarket chain has listed 'Macclesfield - North' as one of their target locations.

Attempts to open a Lidl in our town date as far back as 2015, with plans last being approved by Cheshire East Council in 2018 for a site on Parsonage Street off've Park Green, and the A536.

However, this approval has since expired, so Lidl would have to re-apply for planning permission, and no plans of yet has been submitted. It is unknown if this is the same site.

The old plans for the Lidl site would've had the store just a one minute drive away from Aldi, another German discount retailer who have a site on Queen Victoria Street.

The current nearest Lidl to Macclesfield town centre is on Wilmslow's Dean Row Road.

A new Lidl is also earmarked elsewhere in the Macclesfield parliamentary constituency, as one was earmarked for Poynton.

There are also hopes for a new store in Alderley Edge, Knutsford, and Congleton.

Do you think Lidl would provide a boost to our town centre?

Macclesfield Nub News spoke to Lidl GB's Regional Head of Property, Dominic Bryan.

"We remain committed to bringing a new store to Macclesfield and serving our fresh, quality and affordable produce to residents," he said.

"We are currently reviewing our proposals and look forward to sharing any updates with the local community as and when we are in a position to do so."
