Lidl have set a deadline for when they'd like to open a new store in Macclesfield.

As reported on Macclesfield Nub News last year, the German discount supermarket chain wanted to open a store in Macclesfield North, bringing 40 jobs to our town.

However, no action has happened on this since. But a new document by the company suggests their desire has not waned, with a target date even being revealed.

Macclesfield North is on the list of new stores to open by 2025, but no specific address is specified for this prospective store.

Attempts to open a Lidl in our town date as far back as 2015, with plans last being approved by Cheshire East Council in 2018 for a site on Parsonage Street off've Park Green, and the A536.

However, this approval has since expired, so Lidl would have to re-apply for planning permission, and no plans of yet has been submitted. It is unknown if this three year target will be for the same site.

The newly-released document of site requirements also earmarks new Lidl's near Macclesfield, such as Congleton, Sandbach and Crewe.

Richard Taylor, Lidl GB's Chief Development Officer said: "We know that the majority of British shoppers still love doing their shopping in person and we are as committed as ever to opening new stores and enhancing our existing ones.

"We're opening an average of one new store a week, which is incredible, and our teams have done a phenomenal job of keeping that pace going over the last couple of years.

"But there are still communities up and down the country that are telling us how much they want – and need - a Lidl store. We work with some of the best people in the industry to identify new sites, but we also know how engaged our future and existing customers are and we want to build on this.

"Our finder's fees are, therefore, available to absolutely anyone that can identify a viable option for a new store that we're not already aware of, and we welcome any suitable suggestions that will help up us to meet our ambitious target of 1,100 stores by the end of 2025."

The potential new store would likely compete with Macclesfield Queen Victoria Street's Aldi.
