Lloyds Bank are leaving Macclesfield, with a closure set for next year.

The Mill Street bank, on a corner plot which also faces Queen Victoria Street, has revealed they will be closing in 2025.

The bank, of 64-66 Mill Street, will shut in January.

This could also mean there will be less cash machines in the town pending a review, leaving Natwest, Santander, and the banks on Castle Street as Macclesfield's only remaining high street banks.

A message on the Lloyds Bank Macclesfield webpage reads: "Please note: this branch is due to close permanently on 28/01/2025."

"A community banker will visit this area."

However, it is not currently detailed what the 'community banker' provision precisely entails.

Barclays, who left Macclesfield's high street almost two years ago, have a 'banking hub', of sorts, located inside Macclesfield Library. Could Lloyds follow suit?

It is not yet known how many jobs have been lost, or whether they will be offered new positions elsewhere.

A document on the Lloyds Bank website reads "Before we close any branch, we look at how our customers are managing their money and using the branch. Most customers are now using our Mobile Banking app, Internet Banking or calling us instead. This means they are using branches, including our Macclesfield branch much less.

"Because of this, we'll be closing our Macclesfield branch."

Macclesfield's Lloyds Bank closure follows the 2023 closures of nearby branches in New Mills and Hazel Grove.

It now means that Stockport is the closest Lloyds Bank branch. There is also Altrincham. Failing that, there is always Manchester.

Lloyds Bank spokesperson told Macclesfield Nub News, "As many customers now choose to bank through their mobile app or online, visits to our Macclesfield branch have fallen over recent years.

"The local Post Office offers everyday banking, with cash also available at close by free-to-use ATMs. Customers can also manage their money through our mobile banking apps, online, by calling us or speaking to a Community Banker."

"83% of our personal customers already use other ways of banking, such as mobile, internet or phone banking, as well as other branches."

Macclesfield MP Tim Roca has penned a letter of concern. And wants to see the closure decision reversed.

Speaking on Facebook, Macclesfield's new Labour MP said: "Today I have written to the Chief Executive of Lloyds Banking Group to urge him to reconsider the proposed closure of our Macclesfield Lloyds branch.

"Losing another bank from our community will have a detrimental impact on so many residents and businesses.

"As the cost of living still bears down on a lot of my constituents, banks should be improving and investing in access to services, not withdrawing them from our local high streets and town centres.

"I have reservations about the proposed Community Banker services which will see a significant reduction in staff and services compared to what we have available in Macclesfield at present."

The news comes ten months after Halifax announced the closure of their Macclesfield bank.
