Halifax has announced it is leaving Macclesfield.

The bank will shut early next year.

Halifax, who previously pledged in 2022 that they would not close any branches until 2024, has now announced their latest wave of closures.

The Chestergate bank is one of 22 latest Halifax branches announced to be closed.

The last day you can bank at their Macclesfield branch is March 11, 2024.

They are the latest high street bank to close following Barclays shutting at the start of 2023, and RBS before that.

A Halifax spokesperson said: "As many customers now choose to bank online or through their mobile app, visits to Macclesfield branch have fallen over recent years. The local Post Office offers everyday banking, with cash also available at close by free-to-use ATMs, alongside other ways to bank such as online, phone and mobile banking services."

The statistics behind the reason for the banks closure are as follows:

"75% of our personal customers already use other ways of banking, such as mobile, internet or phone banking, as well as other branches," they said.

"Branch transactions at the Macclesfield branch fell more than 59% between 2018 and 2023.

"The nearby Post Office, which is a five minute walk away at 51 Mill Street, offers personal and business customers everyday banking services, access to cash, paying in of cheques, and more.

"The nearest free-to-use ATM is a short walk away (0.02 miles), and there are seven free-to-use ATMs within a quarter of a mile of the closing branch.

"Customers can use any Halifax branch for their banking, alongside other options such as the Post Office, online, mobile and telephone banking.

"In the run up to the branch closure, branch staff will be on-hand to offer support and guidance on the ways customers can bank with us. After the branch closes, we will have a Community Banker visit the area, who will continue to offer face to face targeted support for as long as the community needs it.

"We will discuss with local communities which locations would be appropriate for our Community Banker to set up in, and on which days."

It is not yet known what will take the bank's place, or how many jobs have been lost.

This means the only high street banks left in Macclesfield are the Co-op, Nationwide Building Society and HSBC, all on Castle Street, as well as Natwest on Chestergate.
