Our high street will have one less bank as of this autumn, as RBS Macclesfield is to close their doors.

The Natwest-owned branch is the second high street bank to close this year, following Virgin Money shutting on Market Place.

RBS Macclesfield, located on 56 Chestergate, will shut their doors on October 12.

In a document announcing the closure, RBS Macclesfield said: "With the ease of mobile and digital banking fewer people are coming into the bank, this means we've had to make some tough choices about which can stay open. So, we want to make sure that we keep the branches people are using most.

"This branch has seen an average counter transactions reduced by 53% between January 2018 and February 2020. The number of [RBS Macclesfield] customers using mobile apps increased by 17% in the same period.

They also claimed the branch was used by just nine personal customers in 2019, and 82 business customers regularly used the now-closing physical premises for the same year.

The decision was a response to these 2019 figures, and they allege was not influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is the latest closure announced on Macclesfield's high street, following recent closures Tilly's Sweets on Mill Street, The Copper Room restaurant (across the road from RBS Macclesfield), and Coffee Traders on Chestergate.

RBS Macclesfield will maintain their current opening times until they shut on October 12.

They are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 9:30am to 3:30pm, and Wednesday 10am to 3:30pm.

RBS's parent company NatWest, which took over RBS last year, will still have a bank on Chestergate. And RBS customers are welcome to use that branch.

Other High street banks that remain in Macclesfield include Barclays on Market Place, and the Co-op Bank on Castle Street.
