Macclesfield: 'Asking for Johnson's resignation is not enough' - Local politicians rage at PM party scandal

By Alex Greensmith 14th Jan 2022

It goes without saying that Boris Johnson's latest scandal sent shockwaves across the country today.

And we have contacted Macclesfield's MP, and Macc representatives of the four main parties, in the wake of the alleged boozy garden party at 10 Downing Street in the coronavirus lockdown May 2020.

David Rutley MP, Macclesfield Conservatives and did not respond to our requests for comment on January 12.

However, Macclesfield representatives for two of the big four parties in our town have called for the PM to resign. With one even stating 'resignation is not enough'.

Macclesfield Lib Dems, who came third in the 2019 General Election were first to respond to our request for comment.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Jo Maitland sent this statement on behalf of Macclesfield Liberal Democrats.

"Macclesfield Liberal Democrats have today written to David Rutley MP asking for his comment on the alleged parties that seem to have taken place throughout the pandemic at No. 10 Downing Street.

"As our elected MP he must respond to his constituents and take the brunt of our anger and upset and act on our behalf.

"Since this government were elected we have rolled from one story of corruption and 'jobs for our mates' to another and I certainly hope ultimately, they will be found out. But the moral corruption we are seeing, the lack of respect for what our country was suffering at the time which translated into a series of gatherings in flagrant disregard of the rules is impossible to stomach.

"I'm sure his, and those of other Conservatives', inboxes are full of people describing what they were doing on May 20th 2020, perhaps more importantly, what they weren't doing.

"There's no defence of the behaviour and I'm afraid saying he wasn't a part of it isn't enough. There's an expectation that as our MP, regardless of party politics, Mr Rutley must take a firm stance against this. Otherwise he's joining with those condoning the disrespect of the very real struggles of all the millions of us who were abiding by the rules were experiencing.

"It is worrying to read rhetoric and comment saying that the rules were silly, it was only a party, what harm is done but we must not forget that the United Kingdom is a G7 country, our Prime Minister and those who advice and support him make powerful decisions on our behalf.

"We are a nuclear power, we face a global climate crisis, we are mid-negotiations on sensitive world trade deals, and we are still wading through a pandemic. We need to trust these people to look out for us and our interests. That trust is gone for many of us and simply asking for Johnson's resignation is not enough. We must use our vote at the next opportunity to say quite how fed up we are with their appalling lack of regard for the people of this country who they represent."

Macclesfield Constituency Labour Party were next to respond to request for comment.

They finished second behind Mr Rutley's Conservatives in the 2019 General Election.

Macclesfield West and Ivy Cheshire East councillor and Chair of Macclesfield Labour Party, Nick Mannion sent the following statement:

"Whilst the people of Macclesfield followed the rules, staying home, missing out on major life events and being with loved ones both at home and in hospital and care homes - some at the end of their lives. Boris Johnson, as Prime Minister both condoned and attended a party in his own garden in flagrant breach of the law.

"747 people died in Cheshire East in 2020 whilst Boris Johnson partied in his garden - he should resign."

It is worth noting that both national Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey and Labour Leader Keir Starmer have also called for the resignation of PM Boris Johnson.

Third to respond were Cheshire East Green Party, who's candidate came fourth in Macclesfield in the 2019 general election.

John Knight, on behalf of Cheshire East Green Party, said: "On 20th May 2020, the Prime Minister attended a garden party with dozens of his employees.

"While we were staying home, while loved ones gave birth, or died, or were buried alone - the Prime Minister partied. It is right that we are furious and it is fair that we feel abandoned. And yes - the Prime Minister should resign.

"But we must not lose sight of why we stayed home - to protect one another. Hundreds of thousands of people in the UK have lost their lives to this virus. Millions across the world; mothers, daughters, fathers, sons, partners - people who were loved. And if we hadn't acted to protect one another, many more would have died. So at a time when we feel frustrated at the recklessness of those setting the rules - let's keep doing our best to protect each other.

John Knight of Cheshire East Green Party: "It is right that we are furious and it is fair that we feel abandoned. And yes - the Prime Minister should resign."

"Meanwhile, NHS staff have to work in unsafe conditions - as highlighted by the March with Midwives vigils and demonstrations last November. With more and more NHS staff off sick, all this government has suggested is sending them back to work when they are potentially still spreaders, or not yet recovered.

"Let's lead with fairness, responsibility and integrity. And if that leaves the Prime Minister behind, so be it."
