A local man with a brain tumour is to cycle almost 300 miles in August.

Liam Bergin (51) from Bollington, who has a stage 4 brain tumour known as glioblastoma, quit his job upon receiving his cancer diagnosis.

Since then, the ex-university caterer has got on his bike to raise money for charity, despite his condition.

As he prepares to cycle 274 miles throughout August, the brain tumour patient has passed the £6000 milestone for good cause Brain Tumour Research.

"In August I'm going to ride 274 miles which is about 1/10th of a days research so my target is 2 whole days," he said.

"Last year we raised circa 30,000. Thank you to everyone from the Macclesfield area and beyond for your support.

"I have Stage 4 Glioblastoma and whilst I may be hit by a bus, it's more likely this incurable cancer will get me.

"The brilliant NHS are doing their best to keep me going but Brain Tumours are complicated and have small reward on bang for buck on research from the the big pharmaceutical companies, hence this charity. Brain Tumour cancers are the biggest killers of the under 40's.

"I am married to Jen, sadly we lost her son, my Stepson Lewi a few years ago. Between us we have 3 other children. Joe 19, Caitlin 17 and Esme 15.

"I have tried to embed my self in the community raising funds and awareness where I can. My £7000 target is to the equivalent of a days worth of treatment research."

The bike mad dad used to work for a university in Manchester, but retired after his diagnosis in April 2020.
