A local rock sculptor is to hold an exhibition in a nearby town.
Thursday February 29 will see the launch of a new stone Sculpture Exhibition by Bollington artist, Estelle Hazlewood at the Northern-scapes Gallery in Alderley Edge.
The exhibition will run for a month (finishing 28 March) and will feature regular opportunities to meet the artist and see a free stone carving demonstration.
The exhibition will feature figurative and abstract sculptures made using hand tools and traditional carving techniques.
Estelle, who has lived in Bollington for 12 years, uses serpentine, alabaster and Staffordshire sandstone.
At her workshop in Bollington, near Macclesfield, Estelle creates sculptural pieces that explore our connection to the past.
They emerge out of a sense of the weight of deep time held within the rock itself. This is contrasted with the ephemeral of the here and now – often evoked by a look, a gesture in fragile human form.
"I am delighted to have the chance to share my work with local art enthusiasts and people curious about what's involved in carving stone," said Estelle.
"Held within the body of stone are the scars, bruises and transformations that testify to its journey through time.
"I respond to strata or forms in the rock, feeling my way through points of resistance and light. As a sculptor, I am adding a new chapter to the stone's ongoing story. In this way, I describe my sculpting technique as a form of conversation with the stone."
Simply turn up to Northern-scapes Gallery (79a London Rd, Cheshire, Alderley Edge SK9 7DY) during the period of dates mentioned above. Or see Estelle's website for full details.
The gallery is the permanent studio space of artist Jessica Owen.
Jessica, who is the Gallery Owner a Landscape Artist herself, is excited to host the Bollingtonian's work: "Estelle's sculpture smoothly glides between the modern and traditional," said Jessica.
"My imagination is particularly fired up by her use of stone from nearby. Ancient Staffordshire sandstone holds such a weight of history. Now being held in time in a new form."
"Seeing sculpture made in the gallery space is such a great addition to this creative space.''
