Ballroom dancing is enjoying a resurgence in Bollington.

DanceTech Ballroom Academy, based at Bollington Civic Hall, runs adult classes throughout the week covering ballroom, Latin American and sequence dancing.

Principal, Peter Bailey, says there is a common misconception that adult dance classes are primarily aimed at people who have never danced before.

He's looking to challenge that, offering classes from beginner through to improvers, intermediate and advanced level.

Peter said: "People sometimes think of adult dance classes as something you try for a few weeks, learn a few basic steps and then stop. Ballroom dancing can actually be a hobby you continue developing for the rest of your life.

"There is always another aspect of the dancing to improve – whether that is technique, movement, musicality, partnering or simply learning new dances and figures.

"We have people at very different stages of their dancing, and that is one of the things that makes it so enjoyable."

Peter has taught dancing for more than 30 years and is a Fellow and Examiner of the International Dance Teachers' Association.

He also adjudicates dance competitions, including IDTA Medalist Qualifiers and Finals.

At DanceTech Ballroom Academy, he teaches a number of familiar dances, including the Waltz, Tango, Foxtrot, Quickstep, Cha Cha Cha, Rumba, Samba and Jive, as well as sequence dancing.

Peter said: "Strictly Come Dancing has obviously introduced millions of people to Ballroom and Latin dancing, but there is a big difference between watching it and experiencing dancing yourself.

"You certainly don't need to look like a Strictly professional to enjoy it.

"My aim is for people to walk through the door, enjoy learning and then discover how far they can take their dancing if they want to."

A new adult beginners ballroom and Latin dance class begins on Friday, September 11, at Bollington Civic Hall.

Meanwhile, for those who have mastered the basics, DanceTech's improvers classes concentrate on expanding their knowledge and developing technique, while intermediate and advanced classes allow more experienced dancers to work on movement, musicality and the overall quality of their dancing.

Peter added: "You don't have to want to compete or take examinations to become a better dancer.

"For many people the satisfaction comes from realising that something which felt difficult six months ago now feels completely natural.

"Others enjoy the social side. Dancing is unusual because you're learning a skill, listening to music, exercising and interacting with another person all at the same time."
