A rural Macclesfield pub is hosting a darts contest for charity.

The Harrington Arms, on Leek Road in Bosley, hope to raise hundreds of pounds for Prostate Cancer UK.

The charity darts competition will take place on Saturday March 16.

The event is the idea of The Harrington Arms staff member Ollie Revill.

The pub has a five-star rating on Facebook Reviews. (Image - Macclesfield Nub News)

Ollie has been working at the Harrington arms for over four years.

The Macclesfield 17-year-old spoke to Macclesfield Nub News about how the fundraiser came to be.

"I am studying sports science at Macclesfield College", said Ollie.

"While studying this course I have grown a real interest in the world of darts and various other sporting events.

"With The Harrington Arms being the local pub in the village of Bosley, I have really enjoyed my time here it has a great community spirit where many people of the local area come together to support events like this."

The idea for the darts competition came from the recent World Championships back in December where many people - including Ollie - were inspired by Luke Littler's dream run to the final.

Ollie is the same age as the world runner-up.

"After the Darts World Championships, we decided to install a darts board in the pub," told Ollie.

"Many people have enjoyed it. So we thought why not organise something for not only a good cause, but for an enjoyable day for everyone to hopefully raise money for a great charity and to bring people together and hopefully make it a really enjoyable day.

"The choice of charity we thought was a good idea as 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with this terrible disease in their lifetime, and we should raise awareness to speak up about the diagnosis and symptoms.

"We have had many posters up throughout the pub giving information and symptoms to be aware of.

"I do not have a current target that I would like to raise, but I just want to raise as much money as possible for such a great charity.

"We have already had several donations and I hope that they continue throughout the coming weeks leading up to the event, and many more on the day.

"This event is open to all of the general public with all abilities welcome the main aim for us is to get as many people here which is sure to be a great day.

"Games will begin from 1pm, where there will be food kindly given to all players on the day.

"There will be a £5 entry fee per player with all money going to charity.

"We will also be holding a raffle where there will be many prizes available to win."

According to the London-based charity, 1 in 8 men will get prostate cancer, and there are 130 new cases in the UK every day.

Prostate cancer accounted for 27% of all new cancer diagnoses in males from 2016 to 2018.

Seren Evans, Head of Events and Community Fundraising at Prostate Cancer UK, said: "We're really grateful for the support of Ollie and the Harrington Arms pub with the upcoming darts event."

"Darts has been so influential in raising the profile of prostate cancer - a disease which affects 1 in 8 men in the UK. Events like this will help us drive home that message further and fund vital research that will help us save and enrich the lives of men with prostate cancer."

"Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and an early diagnosis can save your life. Men are at higher risk if they are over 50, Black or have a father or brother who has had prostate cancer. Anyone with concerns should visit the charity's online risk checker.

"We were proud to be the charity partner of the recent Paddy Power World Darts Championship, raising £1million, and it's brilliant to see how the sport continues to catch the imagination. Best of luck to Ollie and everybody involved."

The Harrington Arms Landlord Steven Machin said: "We are proud to host to benefit Prostate Cancer UK and to get all walks of life back into a great old pub sport."

Ollie, who first began his job as a kitchen porter but also works front of house at the pub, is excited for the event.

"I think more people should be playing darts as it's a great way to socialise with new people in places like pubs and sports bars where it can help support these smaller businesses," Ollie added.

"I would personally like to say thank you to everyone who is planning on coming to the event and I can't wait to see everyone there and thank you to those who have also donated raffle prizes and donated to our charity boxes on site.

"If you would like anymore information regarding the event please contact The Harrington Arms on 01260 223113."

Prostate Cancer UK has been contacted by Macclesfield Nub News on February 25 for comment.
