The grassroots campaign to save a natural beauty spot in South Macclesfield has reached touching distance of Parliament.
This is as XR Macclesfield join Environment Protest in London representing local Save Danes Moss Campaign
Members of Extinction Rebellion (XR) Macc headed to the capital last weekend for the XR-led climate and environmental protest, The Big One, in Parliament Square and around Westminster.
There, they represented local campaign 'SAVE DANES MOSS' and joined over 90,000 protestors and over 200 organisations in calling for urgent climate action from the government.
XR Macc picketed the Department of Environment (DEFRA), raising Save Danes Moss banners and flags and handing out leaflets to those working there to raise awareness of the plans to build hundreds of houses on Danes Moss, which would result in the destruction of crucial carbon capturing peatbog as well as endangering the huge diversity of plants and animals that thrive there.
In an inspiring speech outside DEFRA, Caroline Lucas called for government to tell the truth about the climate emergency, to stop funding the obscenely prosperous fossil fuel mega giants whilst ordinary people struggle to heat their homes, and to keep the fossil fuels in the ground, giving us all a chance of a liveable future.
Earth Day on Saturday April 22nd brought rallying speeches from scientists and environmentalists, including TV wildlife celebrity Chris Packham who demanded urgent action on biodiversity loss and called for everyone to support XR, stating "We want every last person who cares to get involved because caring is not enough".
Packham himself, is a backer of the 'SAVE DANES MOSS' campaign, having spoke out about it in public and on social media in numerous occasions, including an event in Macclesfield.
XR Macc led a large section of the Biodiversity March, bearing a banner stating "No Nature No Future" and carrying flags representing iconic bird species, to highlight biodiversity loss. The march reached from Horse Guards Parade to Lambeth Bridge, with tens of thousands participating. It ended with a symbolic and powerful "die in" as everyone lay on the road in silence, while birdsong played, to contemplate the mass extinction of multiple species.
Sunday 23rd was the iconic London Marathon and XR members acted as marshals during the day to support the runners and to help prevent any disruption to the event, following positive collaborative talks with the race director Hugh Brasher.
For the Finale on Monday, members of the XR Macc group joined further People's Pickets and a final march to Parliament through central London, picketing the head quarters of Shell Oil and delivering XR UK's final demands to government: that they stop issuing licenses for new gas and oil fields, and that they create Citizens' Assemblies to decide how to respond to the climate and ecological crisis.
In January this year, XR announced that they would be moving away from their more radical actions and focusing on building connections and support for aligned organisations. Yet if these demands are not met by the government, XR will be forced to return again to more extreme actions, until the climate emergency is adequately responded to by the government.
A petition to prevent the plans for the South Macclesfield site has almost 7000 signatures.
