A Macclesfield FC midfielder has been recalled to play international football, at the age of 39.

Neil Danns - who is just eight months shy of his 40th birthday - joins a small group of players to play senior international football in their late 30s.

Danns has played for Guyana since 2015, which he qualifies for via his grandfather.

The Liverpool-born player joined The Silkmen last September, and was a crucial part in Macclesfield FC's promotion-winning campaign.

Danns even scored the first goal in the game which confirmed The Silkmen as champions at the Leasing.com Stadium.

The midfielder has scored 20 goals for The Silkmen this season, which has attracted the attention of Guyanese manager Jamaal Shabazz.

Danns has been recalled to the Guyana squad for the games vs Barbados and Trinidad.

The nation has not qualified for the 2022 FIFA World Cup, so the matches will be friendlies during this international break.

With 17 caps and nine international goals to his name, Danns will hope to add to his tally this weekend.

This rules him out of the Cheshire East derby in Crewe this weekend, where the Silkmen take on Congleton Town.

However, younger players were likely to get the nod over Danns regardless, as Danny Whitaker experiments with his side in the no-stakes final matches of the season.

Earlier this morning, Neil tweeted: "Pleasure to be recalled back to international duty at this age. Always [an] honour."

Macclesfield FC added "Amazing news. Our first international player! Congratulations Neil Danns."

Guyana have never made it to a FIFA World Cup. But Danns helped them qualify for their first international tournament.

In the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup, Danns impressed and was named in the Group Stage Best XI.

It is why despite entering his fourth decade, he becomes one of the world's oldest current international footballers.

Danns is a former Premier League footballer who has played twice with Macclesfield FC Director of Football Robbie Savage.

It is hoped Danns is the first of many Macclesfield FC international footballers to be capped, as the phoenix club rises up the non-league football pyramid.

The news comes just days after Danns put pen to paper on a new one-year contract extension at our town's new football club.
