Macclesfield gym fined £1,000 for opening during lockdown

By James Kelly 11th Nov 2020

A Macclesfield gym has been issued a £1,000 fine for a "blatant" breach of the lockdown restrictions.

Police issued the fine yesterday (Monday) after officers received a report that the gym was open despite being classed as a "restricted business".

Under the current lockdown restrictions, all businesses deemed to be "non-essential" have been ordered to close until 2 December, with some exceptions.

In a statement, Cheshire Police said: "Patrols attended and found two gym members in attendance along with personal trainers.

"Officers engaged and explained with the owners but had no choice but to enforce the lockdown regulations and issue a fixed penalty notice of £1,000 due to this blatant breach."

The gym has not been identified.

Police added: "Now more than ever we must all stick to the rules to help reduce the spread of the virus."
