Swimming pools in our area could struggle amidst a reported shortage of chlorine.

Operators of the sites have responded to claims of a national shortage of the chemical, used to keep facilities clean.

None of them have so far highlighted any urgent worries, but bosses say they are monitoring the situation.

A statement from a council near to Macclesfield recently raised an alarm.

The shortages have been attributed to the 2022 Chinese lockdowns, global logistics issues, and a US chemical plant fire. (Image - Pixabay)

A spokesperson for East Staffordshire Borough Council commented: "The leisure facilities currently have plenty of supplies in stock and Everyone Active have contingency measures in place should they become necessary, such as alternative suppliers or stock transfers between their various sites."

Whereas Macclesfield Leisure Centre's pool organisers remained more calm.

Everybody Health and Leisure operates a number of swimming pools in Macclesfield, Alsager, Congleton (when it was still open) and Sandbach.

Dominic Crisp, Head of Operations at Everybody Health and Leisure said: "We we're fortunate to see this shortage coming.

"While this issue has only been widely reported in recent weeks, the reality is this has been an ongoing pressure for several months now.

"We have been actively working with a number of suppliers to secure what stocks we can and we currently have a healthy reserve and additional orders on their way.

"Some other local authorities haven't been as fortunate and have seen the introduction of reduced pool programmes. This is not the case in Cheshire East.

"While we do not anticipate any disruption to our current pool programmes, we have been working on a contingency plan to ensure greater resilience."

Bollington Health & Leisure - of Heath Road - were also contacted by Macclesfield Nub News for comment. Manager Tom Horsfield responded with the following:

"The nationwide shortage hasn't been a great secrete in the industry," he said.

"We have known about the shortages from late last year and told to prepare accordingly.

"As a result in March 2022 we changed our system from a powdered based Chlorine (Calcium hypochlorite) to a Hydrolyser which generates the Chlorine from bags of salt, so thankfully we haven't been affected by the shortages. "

"Swim England have been proactive in preparing guidance for swimming pools and ways in which you can conserve your usage. The bigger issue in the industry is the increasing energy bills."
