A former Cheshire ambulance is to be restored and sent to Ukraine.

Macclesfield resident and business owner Ben Dykstra is doing up an old ambulance from the 1990s, which was once used at Crewe Ambulance Station.

The classic car restorer by trade has already sent two vehicles to Ukraine, including one he delivered himself shortly after the Russian invasion began.

A Land Rover he recently sent is now being used as an ambulance, so he thought for his next project he would try to send over a fully kitted-out working ambulance.

The car is a 1992 Ford E350 Ambulance and runs on diesel. It has been in the UK since 1995 and was used as an intensive care unit in Staffordshire. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"My friend Marcus introduced me to Ukraine in 2014, and I fell in love with the place," said Ben.

"It was a life-changing trip. Ukrainian people have always shown me super hospitality, so I thought I should return what I have been given.

"When the war broke out I went straight across and donated a car with supplies.

"And now I have bought an ambulance from a garage in Stoke-on-Trent."

Ben has spent about 10 hours restoring it, and estimates it will need another 20 to be ready to help save lives. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"While the ambulance itself was cheap, I have spent quite a lot of money fixing it back into working condition. So I have set up a crowdfunder to help me kit out the ambulance with supplies, add the finishing touches, and send it over."

Ben wants to raise £4000 to help cover the costs. £210 has been raised for it so far. You can donate here.

"In my opinion, it is better to use in Ukraine than the ambulances we currently have in the UK because it has got a bit of ground clearance," added Ben.

"It is bigger, bulkier, has off-roading altering tyres which will be a bit more handy traversing the current Ukrainian roads.

The ambulance just needs a few minor repairs, and medical supplies, before sending off to the at-war Eastern European country. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

"There is a massive lack of vehicles out there at the moment because they are getting destroyed on a daily basis.

"Large vehicles like this are in dire need. Any amount we raise would be amazing.

"The previous vehicles I sent out completely through funding off my own back, so I really appreciate the help.

"I believe it hasn't been in use for five years. A mate of mine is helping me fill up the ambulance with medical supplies.

"But if you want to donate sealed first aid kits, please message me through my business Thorneycroft Classic Cars.

"Thank you to anyone who donates even if it is just a pound. You are doing a good thing.

"Whatever happens in your life in the UK, really it is never going to be as terrible as what is happening to these people right now.

"These are normal people like you and me that are getting hurt the most. There is nothing quite as crazy as being bombed.

"While I was out there in Lviv, it was surreal to be walking around the city and hear air sirens going off.

"Any money we will put towards this ambulance to get it where it is needed and save some lives."

Ben is also hosting a Ukrainian woman in his home.
