Local Manchester United fans raise over £1200 for Macclesfield autism charity

A Manchester United legend visited Macclesfield at the weekend to help raise money for a local charity.

Ron Atkinson (83) - who won two trophies with The Red Devils as a manager - visited Macclesfield Rugby Club on Friday June 10 to meet Macclesfield Manchester United football fans.

The evening was to raise money for Macclesfield autism charity Space4Autism.

£1200 was raised by the Macclesfield Manchester United Supporters Club, in the event attended in the triple figures.

Funds will go straight to the 17-year-old volunteer-powered charity, who have a premesis on Mill Lane, which offers a comfertable space for families with autism.

Macclesfield Manchester United Supporters Club Committee Member Wayne Sutton helped organise the event.

"We would like to thank Man United legend Ron Atkinson for such a great night, sharing his stories and memories of his tenure at our great club," he said.

"A massive thank you to everyone who attended last nights do at Macclesfield Rugby Union FC, we managed to raise £1218 for Space4autism which is truly remarkable.

"We would also like to thank Macclesfield sport business Edgar Brothers [who have a premesis in the Lyme Green Retail Park] for sponsoring the event, and Rapture for a great Blondie tribute performance.

"We are extremely proud of the money raised last night. Thank you to everybody who bought a ticket for the raffle and a massive thank you to all who donated prizes."

Ron Atkinson managed Manchester United for five years between 1981 and 1986. He oversaw 292 games, winning half of them.

He was replaced by Sir Alex Ferguson, who would then oversee Manchester United's most successful period in their history.

120 people attended the Priory Lane event.

The money will help Space4Autism organise one of their 4000 activities they hold a year, inside or outside their Macclesfield town centre premesis.

"Myself and all at S4A would like to say a huge thank you to everyone involved," said Cheryl Simpson MBE. 

"The local community are so brilliant at supporting us and it really is appreciated."

"Everyone is welcome to come and visit the S4A Café and we also have a beautiful garden you can come and sit in Monday to Thursday from 10am to 3pm," she added."
