Macclesfield: Mayor plants Queen's favourite tree for Platinum Jubilee

By Alex Greensmith 15th Mar 2022

The Mayor of Macclesfield has planted his 12th tree in a Macclesfield school this year.

Cllr David Edwardes, who lives in Tytherington, visited nearby Tytherington School on Manchester Road to plant a new tree in honour of Her Majesty.

Tytherington School was proud to welcome the Mayor to help plant a special oak tree for Queen Elizabeth II.

It was planted as part of The Queen's Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty's Platinum Jubilee, commemorating 70 years on the throne.

Macclesfield Town Council has provided trees for schools and other locations across the town.

The Head Ranger, Andy McKeith, supervised the planting and gave the students a short talk.

He explained that the tree, Quercus robur, is a particular favourite of the Queen and is known as the

Royal Oak. The Mayor addressed the group of students and staff gathered around the tree and spoke about the significance of the occasion and the other trees he has helped to plant in Macclesfield. The Tytherington Platinum Jubilee oak has been planted close to the main entrance, where it can be seen and appreciated by students, staff and visitors to the school. The Head Ranger told the students that the tree would take 75 - 100 years to mature fully. His commentary and advice on tree planting were of special interest to the student members of Tythy Goes Green as they have been busy planting a variety of young, native trees in the school garden. As well as inviting the planting of new trees, The Queen's Green Canopy will dedicate a network of 70 Ancient Woodlands across the United Kingdom and identify 70 Ancient Trees to celebrate Her Majesty's 70 years of service.
