Macclesfield's MP has shared an update on Jodrell Bank's funding situation.

Earlier this week, the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC) confirmed it will be withdrawing funding from the e-MERLIN network, which includes the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank, at the end of its current agreement in 2028.

Since then, Tim Roca MP says he has been working 'flat out' to find out what this could mean for the site.

In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, July 30, Mr Roca said: "Over the past few days, there has been an incredible outpouring of support for Jodrell Bank. It has been heartening to see just how much this remarkable institution means to people across Cheshire and far beyond.

"Since the announcement, I have been working flat out to understand the implications of the decision and make the strongest possible case for Jodrell Bank. I have met with senior leaders at the University of Manchester, spoken directly with the Science Minister, and remain in close contact with Jodrell Bank's lead scientists and Congleton MP Sarah Russell.

"Those discussions will continue in the days and weeks ahead."

Mr Roca continued: "Jodrell Bank is not closing. The STFC has confirmed its investment in the Square Kilometre Array Observatory at the site will continue, and the University of Manchester remains fully committed to Jodrell Bank.

"Funding for the Lovell Telescope's role in the e-MERLIN network is currently in place until 2028. My focus is on securing continued and alternative funding so this vital research can continue beyond then.

"Jodrell Bank is one of Britain's greatest scientific institutions. It has inspired generations of scientists, transformed our understanding of the universe and put Cheshire at the forefront of global research.

"I will continue doing everything I can, alongside Congleton MP Sarah Russell, to support its future and will keep residents updated as discussions progress."
