Macclesfield's MP has shared an update on the future of Jodrell Bank.

On Monday, July 27, the Science and Technology Facilities Council confirmed it is set to axe funding for the e-MERLIN network, which includes the Lovell Telescope at Jodrell Bank in Cheshire.

The move could put 28 jobs at risk and impact the work of nearly 3,000 scientists who use the site in their research.

Tim Roca, the Member of Parliament for Macclesfield, has moved to reassure residents that alternative funding solutions are now being explored.

He said: "I know many people will be concerned by today's news about funding decisions affecting research at Jodrell Bank.

"I am in active discussions with UK Research and Innovation, the STFC and the University of Manchester to fully understand the implications and to make the case for protecting this world leading scientific institution.

"It is important to stress that Jodrell Bank is not closing and scientific work at the site will continue.

"Current funding for e-MERLIN astronomy is in place until 2028, and alternative funding options and new opportunities are being explored.

"STFC has also confirmed that its investment in the Square Kilometre Array Observatory at Jodrell Bank remains one of its highest priorities and will continue.

"However, there are funding decisions affecting astronomy research at the site that I am continuing to work through with Government and the organisations involved.

"I will continue pressing for clarity and the best possible outcome for Jodrell Bank, its staff and the wider scientific community.

I will provide a further update as soon as I am able."

This would be a tragedy for Cheshire - so much history and science - Brian Cox would not be happy - and The Doves would have no background for their videos - so come on lets be sensible - this is a great asset and tourist resource for Cheshire and the North west. A great resource for educating children - the scientists of the future.
