Macclesfield's MP has said the prime minister can leave Downing Street knowing he 'gave everything he had'.

Sir Keir Starmer has announced that he will be standing down as leader of the Labour Party.

Tim Roca, MP for Macclesfield, has taken to Instagram to reflect on the news.

He said: "Politics can be a tough and unforgiving business.

"Keir can leave Downing Street knowing he gave everything he had to a country and a party he truly loves.

"Wishing him, Vic, and their children all the very best for the future."

Stood outside 10 Downing Street on Monday morning, June 22, Sir Keir announced his decision to resign.

Nominations for his successor will open on July 9, with the aim of having a new leader and prime minister in place before Parliament returns in September.

Sir Keir said: "The question my party is asking now is whether I am best placed to lead us into the next general election.

"I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.

"Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first.

"That is why I will resign as leader of the Labour Party."

He added: "When I leave the biggest job in the country, I shall spend more time on the most important job, being the best husband I can to my fantastic wife, Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad, and being the best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and my joy."

Mr Roca's team has been approached for a full statement on Sir Keir's resignation announcement.
