Two Macclesfield residents are doing a sponsored swimathon to raise money for a cancer charity.

Macclesfield resident Vivienne Landers (71) and her friend Zoe Papaphilippou (39) have started a sponsored swim for the charity Brain Tumour Research.

After seeing an advertisement on Facebook, the friends decided that a swimathon would be a great way to raise money.

The swimathon began on August 1 at Macclesfield Leisure Centre, and will continue all month long.

Both are seasoned swimmers. Viv and Zoe are members of the Macclesfield seals swimming club, which meet every Friday evening from 7:30pm. (Image - Alexander Greensmith / Macclesfield Nub News)

Their hope is to honour the memory of Vivienne's son Bobby Kwon, who passed away due to an aneurysm in 1998 aged 25.

"I would love to raise awareness, not only to brain cancer, but to all different types," Vivienne said.

"My family has been struck by cancer multiple times, and I've had it too [breast cancer], meaning there isn't a better cause for me to do this for."

Vivienne and Zoe's aim is to swim as many lengths as possible over the month of August.

Vivienne averages fifty lengths - or one mile - a day, with Zoe able to do even more.

In order to keep track they are using digital watches, supplied by Everybody Health & Leisure, to create accurate measurements for the amount of lengths they do.

"We are really enjoying doing it together, we always go out for a meal when a day's swimming is finished," Vivienne revealed.

So far they've raised £230, with the prospect of gaining a medal from the Brain Tumour Research charity when they reach £270.

When looking for the best place to host their swimathon they decided on Macclesfield Leisure Centre based on the vast amenities that are on offer.

"It has really great facilities like the gym that we've been making use of as well as the pool," Vivienne explained.

Vivienne's favourite part of being in Macclesfield is the open environment it has and the community feel the town provides.

"The countryside is right on our doorstep and there's so many walks to do.

"The people are so lovely as well."
