Macclesfield: Nine-year-old channels the force to raise hundreds for East Cheshire Hospice

One Macclesfield primary school pupil spent the run-up to Christmas raising hundreds for a local charity.

The sight of Star Wars villain circling White Nancy might have frightened a few walkers enjoying a weekend stroll.

But it was actually nine-year-old James Hurley dressed up as his favourite Star Wars character Kylo Ren, ascending Bollington's best-known landmark to raise money for East Cheshire Hospice.

First introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens - released when James was just two - James channelled the force to help scale the 920ft peak.

Now that total has been totted up, and the young lad has raised over £300, well above his initial £200 target.

He chose East Cheshire Hospice as his mum Sharon works there.

He even took his collection bucket to the top, before completing 50 circuits of the monument, with some ramblers donating alongside friends and family.

Class mates and teachers at St Alban's Catholic Primary School, where he is in Year Five, also supported his adventure.

Proud parent Sharon is the sister at the Sunflower Wellbeing Centre.

"It was James' idea to walk round White Nancy," she said.

"With me working at the Hospice, he just decided one day that he wanted to raise money for the Hospice.

"I'm really proud and quite touched that he wanted to do it. I don't talk too much about my work, but he knows I look after poorly people.

"Walkers were clapping James as he walked back down through Bollington village after completing his journey. He's always loved Star Wars and has plenty of costumes."

His school also held cake sales as part of their support for the Hospice.

East Cheshire Hospice will turn 36 this year. Find more about them here.
