Macclesfield: Our favourite pics from a snowy Treacle Market

Some events may have been cancelled at the weekend, but Macclesfield's signature artisan market soldiered on, with no difference in the number of stalls or attendees despite the wintry weather.

Snow only started at about 12pm, so the market had already had two hours of shopping before vendors may have got slightly wet.

Despite this, most stayed until the end and fun was had by all.

There was loads of live performance, keeping Macc dancing to stay warm.

This included Macclesfield kids arts group Cygnets, and Festive Treacle regulars Chordiallity Choir Macclesfield, who showed off some Christmas classics.

A second performance stage for Macclesfield College students debuted on Castle Street.

The Macc educational institute previously only had a stall, but this stage, which is hoped to be permanent, increased their presence at our town's biggest event.

It also aims to help nurture the next generation of young talent in Macclesfield.

The Macclesfield College Stage was located outside Castle Streets Nationwide, with electricity kindly provided by Macclesfield chippy Silktown Fryer.

It was the second time Castle Street had been used in a Treacle Market this year, following the £1.6m council renovation being completed in October.

It hosted 12 food stalls, including the return of Halloumination, the Cypriot cheese experts who made their Treacle debut last month.

New stalls included cookie dough store The Dough Up, who travelled all the way from Manchester despite the icy weather to bring their sweet treats.

Outside Five Clouds with the ad hoc street food quarter, a Greek street food stall was another to make their first, and hopefully not last, Macclesfield Treacle Market appearance.

There was a welcome return to a Burgers, Sausages and Bacon Baps stall on Market Place, who are veterans to the Treacle Market, but served their first stall of 2021.

Traditional Macclesfield Morris dancers performed from Waters Green to Park Green. Bollin Brass were also fundraising on Chestergate, despite their frosty fingers.

It was the turn of Bollington mobile bar Brewbox to be the signature server of booze, but they weren't the only popular place to catch a tipple.

Proper Sound, which opened in late September, served mulled wine and ginger cookies, Charismatic Italian wine expert VinoBuono, who made his Treacle Market debut in September, also returned on Castle Street.

The latter sold organic wine by the glass and bottle, as well as a small deli.

There were new gin brands to try, which made great stocking fillers for your loved ones who fancy a tipple.

Congleton gin brand The Edge Gin made their Treacle Debut.

A new crystal stall came to Exchange Street will also be perched on that street, and artisan jewellers Bymaraca Jewellery had a successful first-ever Treacle Market on Unicorn Gateway.

The dead-end street, which has only been used in the 11-year-history of the Treacle Market for the first time this year, had the magic of a blacksmith doing live demonstrations.

Another highlight on Unicorn Gateway was a new Silk Museum artist print by Macclesfield vendors Courthouse Collective, who also sold high-end Christmas cards based on 100-year-old silk patterns.

Another festive stalls which is expected to return next month included a fresh mistletoe stall.

"This was the first of a double-whammy of Christmas Treacle Markets," said Andy Thompson, Co-Organiser of the Treacle Market.

Co-Organiser Becky Thompson added "Thank you to everyone that withstood the biting cold, but beautiful snow we had today.

"We hope our wonderful traders, volunteers and musicians are all thawing out by a fire!"

The married couple, who took over the Treacle Market earlier in the year, got up just after 5am to make sure the event could go ahead.

The next Treacle Market is one week earlier next month.

This means we only have three weeks until the next one!

This is to allow small local businesses to take advantage of Christmas shopping.

Our town will be transformed and transfixed by Treacle one more on Sunday 19 December.

Twelve markets are already confirmed for 2022, with the first of the new year being on Sunday January 30 2022.

Macclesfield small businesses who wish to have a Treacle Market stall can contact them via the details on their Facebook page.
