Macclesfield's railway station will be brought to a halt once again next month.

The Manchester spur of the West Coast Main Line will be closed on Saturday, October 4, and Sunday, October 5.

This is to allow for more engineering works to take place on the Greek Street bridge and roundabout in Stockport.

Engineers will be removing the wall in the centre of the tracks, which is now redundant. They'll also be starting work to reinstate the road and walls on the roundabout which sits on top of the bridge.

Passengers travelling between Stoke-on-Trent and Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport are advised to check before they travel using the National Rail journey planner.

William Brandon, Network Rail's project manager, thanked passengers for their 'ongoing patience and understanding'.

"Though the reconstruction of the bridge is complete, there is still more work to do", Mr Brandon said.

"To safely install parts of the new roundabout, we need to close the railway again for two days.

"After that, we will begin to work with utility companies to redivert their services though the bridge, before relaying the road ready for people to use again."

These closures come shortly after the Manchester spur of the West Coast Main Line was closed for three weeks in August, while key components of the new Greek Street bridge were lifted into place.

The old bridge is being replaced because it has reached the end of its natural life.

The new bridge and roundabout, now about halfway complete, is expected to last 120 years.

During the closure in October, Macclesfield will be served by a rail replacement bus service.

Network Rail has warned there may be further work required over Christmas.
