A Staffordshire Bull Terrier from Macclesfield has met with a 1990s music legend.

Take That singer Howard Donald paid eight-year-old Champ a visit, as the rescue dog waits for a new owner.

Nicknamed 'Oldie' and 'The Wonder Dog', Champ was rescued by RSPCA Macclesfield after his owner became tragically ill.

Take That founding member Howard Donald (54) had a beaming smile with the male mutt.

"We were delighted for our oldie Champ to meet Howard from Take That, said Laura of RSPCA Macclesfield.

"Champ's Fosterer is friends with him and he came round to pay him a visit."

The rescue dog is currently looking for a fur-ever home, and an appeal has been launched for the people of Macclesfield to find room in their hearts to take him in.

"Champ, a traditional little Staffy, was abandoned in the flat," added Laura.

"But we thankfully traced the owner. Unfortunately, he had got Covid and was hospitalised. He said that someone was meant to be seeing to him. His owner asked to sign Champ over as he was going to be in hospital for some time.

"Champ is a lovely Staffy who likes nothing more than a little human attention, whether you're sat on the sofa with him, or walking past on the street minding your own business, he desperately wants to come and say hello and shower you with his special brand of Champ affection.

"When he wants to show that love, he'll jump up for a cuddle and settle in for a nap next to you, or on your lap, and you'll be left in no doubt that he loves to be loved. If you let him, he'll happily dive under the covers at bedtime and sleep next to your feet, maybe time for a quick cuddle first.

"He can get quite excited when he's going out (anywhere) and does tend to jump up at people so it's something to be aware of around people a little less steady, he's just too friendly! When gets too excited he lets out his half whimper half bark, and it's like he can't contain his excitement. Don't let his grey facial hair lead you to think he's anything but full of energy.

"Having said that, he's generally very calm when the adults of the house are doing their own thing (he loves to sit at the window and watch the world go by), and he's happy to be left, even when his Foster Dad goes out to play golf. He travels fine in the car, but will find it quite exciting and the whimpering noises will resume.

"He loves his food and I suspect his previous owner may have been quite liberal with sharing their dinner. He doesn't appear to know many commands, but with the help of a little cheese, he's nearly learnt to sit when asked. He always takes his treats very politely.

"He loves his walks, any walks, but does get excited and grabs the lead, however that's really calmed down. Unfortunately, he's not dog friendly, so his new owner will need to be careful to avoid other dogs, he whimpers and pulls but easily managed. On walks he loves to take in as many of the smells when outside as he can. If there are any daffodils on the route, you can be sure he'll march straight through them!

He does have the onset of arthritis and is on some pain relief.

"Whoever is lucky enough to get to take Champ to his new forever home will revel in the abundance of love and affection that he loves to give, a little rub on the back or his belly is all he asks in return."
