A campaign group to protect 'Cheshire East Council's Amazon rainforest' will be visible in Macclesfield town centre this week.
'SAVE DANES MOSS (SDM)', a group to stop almost 1000 homes being built on the South Macclesfield Development Area (near the Danes Moss Nature Reserve), will be raising objection to a separate planning application nearby.
Last week, Macclesfield Nub News reported on 92 homes being recommended for refusal on greenfield land on Congleton Road. Cheshire East Councillors will vote on this smaller development this week.
Councillors will meet at Macclesfield Town Hall on Market Place, from 10am on Wednesday July 26. SDM campaigners will be outside raising awareness for their cause.
It is not part of the site the campaign is mainly focussing on, but is still green space that could be lost forever, which could clash with both local and national government targets in regards to climate change.
The proposed 92 houses site, set to be considered this week, forms part of Local Plan Site 15 (LPS 15) on the other side of Congleton Road (behind Macclesfield's Rising Sun pub and south towards Congleton).
Tom Eccles, Chair of SDM told Macclesfield Nub News: "This is yet another sign that Cheshire East Council need to urgently remove all peatlands from the sites allocated for housing in their Local Plan. Thankfully the council officers have recommended this shoddy application is refused. But that is no guarantee that the developers won't be back with a new application later on because the site is allocated for housing.
"It's a scandal that the council has no planning policies to protect peatlands from urban development. How long will it take? How many more precious mosses will be they allow to be destroyed? It makes you wonder what their priorities really are."
