Macclesfield: Speed limits must be kept to bring down road deaths
Macclesfield speed limits must be correct for the specific road if drivers are to comply and reduce the number of serious collisions in Cheshire East, a council report states.
This follows a Macclesfield Nub News report on county road deaths being up 20% last year, despite the country being in lockdown for over half of it.
The draft version of Cheshire East's updated speed management strategy will be considered by the highways and transport committee on Tuesday.
A report due to go before the meeting states: "We know from experience that in Cheshire East where the wrong limits are applied they are generally ignored.
"This means that safety is compromised by drivers failing to comply as walkers and cyclists may be given a false sense of security.
"Therefore, it is important that we follow a considered approach using design to encourage self-compliance where possible."
The draft strategy sets out guidance as to where certain speed limits are suitable.
For example, it provides a means of identifying areas suitable for 20mph limits 'using the movement framework, a consideration of the local road environment and existing speed measurements'.
It also outlines when advisory 20mph limits outside schools may be appropriate.
And it introduces an approach to speed management focused on education of all road users, enforcement and engineering.
The council's road safety objectives are to help reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in road traffic collisions and to reduce the number of collisions involving road users of all types.
The document will be considered at the highways and transport committee meeting which takes place on Tuesday, November 16, at 2pm at Macclesfield Town Hall.
The committee is recommended to approve it go out for an eight-week public consultation.
It will be during those two months where you can propose speed reductions for certain Macclesfield area roads.
A Freedom of Information request has been submitted by Macclesfield Nub News, to identify the worst offenders for speeding roads in Macclesfield.
Earlier in the year, a Macclesfield town councillor was elected on a pledge to campaign for a 20mph speed limit in the centre of Macclesfield.
Currently, you can expect to have cars whizzing down Sunderland Street or Park Green at 30mph.
